Utilizing blogs in the Classroom

From the start of this course, I have been asking myself how I could use blogs in my classrooms? This year, I will be having my level one students reading a book together in class. I would like to use a classroom blog for the students to post their reactions, make comments, or ask questions about what we will be reading. Every class has a student or two who never participates in a discussion. I believe a blog will give those students an opportunity to express themselves without intimidation.
I would also like to post my students' work. I know that I can post pictures, but I would also like to submit videos of my students signing their stories, if this is possible. I wonder, would this be like you-tube? This would be a great way for the students to see how far they have advanced from a level one student up to a level three student! These could become their ASL portfolios!
By posting assignments on our blogs, my students would be able to keep track of their assignments, especially if they miss school due to an illness or an unscheduled vacation from school. Parents would also be able to access the blogs to keep track of their children's assignments and accomplishments.
I am looking forward to all the possibilities of blogging!

  1. I think you have some outstanding ideas of how to incorporate blogs into your classroom. I agree that some students, who are hesitant to participate in classroom discussion, might be more likely to participate through a blog. It gives them the time and privacy they want in order to feel comfortable sharing their ideas. I wonder if these students would come dependent on activities like blogging because they would not have as many opportunities to speak in front of a class. Maybe after they put their ideas in a blog they could share a few of their posts at different points throughout the class? This way they would be getting the best of both worlds!
I also want to use my blog to post student work and classroom information. I too would like a way for students who miss class to stay continuously updated. Great ideas!

  2. Thank you, Katey. I never thought about the students becoming dependent on the blogs for their thoughts. there is so much to consider when utilizing these blogs.

  3. Hi Lynn,
I use blogs and I like to have all students blog because even those students that don't talk much in class can post their thoughts. Personally, I am a better written communicator and blogs are a great way for me to share my thoughts.
You mention a good point about parents being able to access student blogs. I think this can be great tech tool for parents and students.
